Frequently Asked Questions
-
In Virginia (and now almost every other state), you no longer need a referral to see a physical therapist in most cases. This allows us to greatly streamline the process of obtaining musculoskeletal care - you no longer need to wait for a Physician’s visit just to be told to go to PT. Doctors of Physical Therapy are trainedtoscreen out “red flags” such as fractures, systemic diseases, and cancer and refer to Medical Doctors as necessary.
If you have already seen a physician for the issue you’re currently seeking care for, you will need to provide a referral. In addition, some insurance companies require you to have seen a physician in order to obtain reimbursement for out of network physical therapy.

At Persist Physical Therapy, I operate as an out-of-network practice so I can provide longer visits, one-on-one care, and individualized treatment without insurance-driven limitations.
Many clients are surprised to learn that they still have out-of-network physical therapy benefits and may be eligible for partial reimbursement.
As an out-of-network (OON) provider, I can provide a superbill or “receipt” for you upon request. If you have OON coverage, you may submit this superbill to your insurer for reimbursement if eligible. Click herefor more information on determining reimbursement eligibility.

Unfortunately, the Federal Government prohibits Physical Therapists from accepting cash payment from Medicare beneficiaries. However, Wellness Services (non-injury related services) are still available.
